Key Technology for a climate-neutral future
Climate neutrality is to be achieved in the European Union by 2045. To achieve this, energy consumption must be reduced and new, efficient technologies utilised. Hydrogen will be a key energy source that links the electricity and gas sectors.
The German government is planning a massive expansion of ‘green’ hydrogen production through electrolysis. Due to the high fluctuation of the electricity supply, secure storage technologies are needed to supply customers with constant consumption profiles.
Variants
of hydrogen production
- Green hydrogen: Is produced by electrolysis using electricity from renewable energies.
- Grey hydrogen: Is obtained from methane by steam reforming, releasing CO₂.
- Blue hydrogen: Is produced in the same way as grey hydrogen, but the CO₂ is captured and stored.
- Turquoise hydrogen: Produced by pyrolysis of methane, whereby solid carbon is produced as a by-product.
